SEB Policy on Fossil Fuel

Emissions of carbon dioxide derive mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels Concentrations of methane and nitrous oxide have also increased as a result of  84 x – methane (CH4) – I.e. Releasing 1 kg of CH4 into the atmosphere is about equivalent to If you account CH4 as the equivalent of 86 units of CO2, then this year, you have Forcing = ~3.6 W/m^2 plus the forcing from N2O. It is a larger number than what the IPCC admits at this time. For forcing calculations, it does not matter how long a particular molecule of CH4 persists in the atmosphere, what matters is the total concentration. Methane (CH4) has a value of 21. Nitrous oxide (N2O) has a value of 310. This means that a gram of methane has the same effect as 21 grams of CO2. So, even though CO2 is causing the most warming on a pound-for-pound basis, reductions in CH4 or N2O emissions provide a lot more climate relief than those of CO2. For example, reducing methane emissions by one ton would be equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions by 25 tons; thus, its CDE is 25 tons. In the case of N2O, its CDE is 298 tons of CO2. The CH 4 GWP also accounts for some indirect effects, such as the fact that CH 4 is a precursor to ozone, and ozone is itself a GHG. Nitrous Oxide (N 2 O) has a GWP 265–298 times that of CO 2 for a 100-year timescale. N 2 O emitted today remains in the atmosphere for more than 100 years, on average.

As controlled ozone-depleting substances decline, the evolution of the ozone layer in the second half of the 21st century will largely depend on the atmospheric abundances of CO2, N2O, and CH4. 2020-05-01 2010-07-13 2017-03-19 These changes in gas flux amounted to an overall increase of 41% and 30% for N2O emission and CH4 consumption, respectively. However, the effect of lignite additions during the manure composting process, in terms of gaseous emissions of NH3, nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) is not clear. Since each greenhouse gas (GHG) has its own radiative capacity, all three gasses (CO2, CH4 and N2O) must be accounted for by calculating the net global warming potential (GWP) in a crop production system.
